Recurring report workflow

Merge Monthly Sales CSV Files

Combine January, February, March and later sales exports into one longer dataset. For recurring files with the same kind of columns, Stack Rows is usually simpler than matching records by a key.

Recommended setup

Merge mode

Stack Rows. Append each monthly file vertically instead of joining records by a match field.

Header behavior

Columns with equivalent normalized headers line up. Genuinely different column names remain separate.

No matching rules needed

Equivalent-number and spacing match rules apply to joins, not Stack Rows.

How to stack monthly sales files

  1. Add all monthly CSV or Excel files you want to combine.
  2. Select the relevant sheets. If a report starts with title rows or notes, choose the row that actually contains the column headers.
  3. Choose Stack Rows. Review the available output columns and make sure equivalent monthly fields are aligned as expected.
  4. Preview the combined rows, then download one Excel workbook.
This workflow is best when the files represent the same kind of records over different periods. If the files contain different information about the same orders or customers, use a join instead.

Common stacking problems

Wrong header row

A report title above the true headers can create unusable columns. Set the Header row first.

Different meanings

Two columns with similar names should only be aligned if they actually represent the same field.

Schema changes

If a later month adds a new field, that column can appear only for rows from files that contain it.
