Split PDF

Before you export: Downloaded PDFs lose password protection and bookmarks. Form behavior can change, and filled values may remain visible or editable. Keep your originals and check downloaded files before sharing or relying on them.

How to split a PDF

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it on the page or click Select PDF file. Page previews appear in a few seconds.
  2. Choose how to split it. Every page makes one PDF per page. Custom ranges makes one PDF per range, such as 1-3, 5, 8-. Select pages lets you click the pages you want to extract.
  3. Pick ZIP or separate files. If the split creates several PDFs, download them together as a ZIP or one by one.
  4. Split and download. Click Split PDF. Your files are made on this device and the download starts straight away.

Private by design: your PDF never leaves your device

Most online PDF splitters upload your document to a server. MergeStudio doesn’t. Pages are copied into new PDFs in your browser using the open-source pdf-lib library, previews are drawn with Mozilla’s PDF.js, and ZIP files are built with fflate. That makes it a good fit for contracts, statements, scans and other documents you’d rather not hand to a third party.

You can check this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and split a file. You’ll see no request carrying your PDF. See the privacy page for exactly what the site does and doesn’t collect.

Split PDF FAQ

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. MergeStudio opens and splits your PDF with JavaScript running in your browser tab. File contents, file names and passwords are not sent to MergeStudio or anyone else. Anonymous page-view analytics never include file details.

How do I write page ranges?

Separate ranges with commas. 1-3 means pages 1 to 3, 5 means page 5 only, and 8- means page 8 to the last page. Each range becomes its own PDF, and a page can appear in more than one range.

Can I extract just a few pages into one PDF?

Yes. Choose Select pages, click the page previews you want (Shift-click selects a run of pages), and download them as one new PDF. Tick the separate-files option if you want each selected page on its own.

How do I get many files at once?

When a split creates more than one PDF you can download a single ZIP file or save the PDFs one by one. Some browsers ask once for permission before allowing several downloads from one page.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. Enter it when prompted; it is used only on your device to open the file. The new PDFs are saved without a password.

Will the split PDFs lose quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compressing images or turning text into pictures, so text stays selectable. Downloaded PDFs lose password protection and bookmarks. Form behavior can change, and filled values may remain visible or editable. Keep your originals and check downloaded files before sharing or relying on them. Each new file includes the fonts and images its pages need, so the parts can add up to more than the original size.

Is there a page or size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Splitting happens in your device’s memory, so very large files (hundreds of megabytes) may be slow or fail on phones. Splitting a long document into every page creates many files, which takes longer. Each processing request stops after two minutes. Use Cancel and clear files to stop sooner, then add your file again.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. Your own browser does the work, so there is no server cost to pass on.
