What does an online VLOOKUP alternative do?
The core job of VLOOKUP is to find a matching value in another table and return related information. MergeStudio performs the same type of record matching as a spreadsheet join: choose the field that identifies the same record in each source, select the data you want to keep, and generate a new combined file.
Example: Customers.xlsx contains Customer ID, Name, Email and Orders.csv contains Account Number, Order Date, Total. If Customer ID and Account Number contain the same identifiers, those rows can be matched even though the column names are different.

How to match spreadsheet files without VLOOKUP
- Open the MergeStudio merge tool.
- Choose the Excel, XLSX, XLS or CSV files you want to connect.
- Select the worksheet sources you need.
- Choose Master + Enrich for the closest equivalent to a normal left-side VLOOKUP workflow.
- Choose the matching field separately for each source.
- Select the columns you want returned in the final spreadsheet.

Example: match a customer list with orders
This small example shows why a join may return more rows than a lookup formula. Customer 001 has two orders; customer 002 has none.

Choose Master + Enrich, then select Customer ID, Name and Order ID as the output columns. The merged Excel file contains:

Choose Matches Only to omit Robin's unmatched row. Choose Stack Rows instead of a join when your files contain similar lists that belong one below another.
Is MergeStudio an XLOOKUP alternative?
For exported data, it can replace the task of matching records and bringing fields into a combined file. XLOOKUP itself can return several columns from one formula and supports exact, approximate and wildcard matching. See Microsoft's XLOOKUP documentation.
MergeStudio joins matching text values after ignoring case and trimming surrounding spaces. It does not perform approximate or wildcard lookups, and its exported results do not recalculate. It keeps all matching row combinations rather than selecting only the first match.

Can I use more than two files?

Can the matching columns have different names?
Yes. The values need to describe the same key, but the headers do not have to match. For example, Customer ID, Account Number and Client ID can all be mapped together if their values identify the same records.
What about multiple matches and duplicates?
Lookup formulas often return one match, while a true join can produce several rows when a key appears multiple times. MergeStudio reports duplicate-key rows in its quality summary so you can see when a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship is affecting the output.
When should I still use VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP?
Use Excel formulas when the result should remain live and recalculate whenever source cells change. Use MergeStudio when you have exported files or worksheet tables and want a clean combined output without maintaining formulas or external workbook references.
Does it work with CSV files?
