What does an online VLOOKUP alternative do?
The core job of VLOOKUP is to find a matching value in another table and return related information. Example: Customers.xlsx contains Customer ID, Name, Email and Orders.csv contains Account Number, Order Date, Total. If Customer ID and Account Number contain the same identifiers, those rows can be matched even though the column names are different.

How to match spreadsheet files without VLOOKUP

Can the matching columns have different names?
Yes. The values need to describe the same key, but the headers do not have to match. For example, Customer ID, Account Number and Client ID can all be mapped together if their values identify the same records.
What about multiple matches and duplicates?
Lookup formulas often return one match, while a true join can produce several rows when a key appears multiple times. MergeStudio reports duplicate-key rows in its quality summary so you can see when a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship is affecting the output.
When should I still use VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP?
Use Excel formulas when the result should remain live and recalculate whenever source cells change. Use MergeStudio when you have exported files or worksheet tables and want a clean combined output without maintaining formulas or external workbook references.
